Top Jobs in the Hospitality Industry

The hospitality and tourism industry is extremely lucrative and due to the specialised roles which are sought after, careers in the hospitality industry are generally well remunerated.

Businesses which are focused on service to high-end clientele are going to ensure that only the crème de la crème of each field under the hospitality umbrella is hired.

Therefore, if it’s your passion to be of the best possible service, then choosing one of the many careers in the hospitality industry will prove to be exceptionally rewarding.

Types of hospitality careers

Generally speaking, any business which provides hospitality services will require a large team to make sure that every detail of service is covered – from cleaning to cooking, greeting, serving and entertaining.

Below is a list of our top 5 jobs in the hospitality industry at the moment:

•    Guest Relations Manager

Looking after and hosting guests throughout their stay to ensure they have the opportunity to experience all that the Resort has to offer, that they have a comfortable and enjoyable stay, and that they leave with good memories of the property and the people is the primary function of the Guest Relations Manager.

The guest relations manager requires a complete picture of guest requirements, likes and dislikes, and to plan for them accordingly. Be the person they know they can ask for advice on the area, or run to first with a problem or issue. Anticipate their needs before they arise if you can. Review guest pre arrival questionnaires and Google guests for further information.

Taking a holistic view of a guest’s activity needs during their stay to ensure they have a memorable experience at the Resort. Planning the best activities to fit their schedule (allowing for weather and tides), in co-ordination with other relevant departments and managers.

Creating “wow” experiences and activities for guests.

•    Executive Chef

It takes some time and dedication to become an established chef. When starting off as a chef, the salary is not as high as that of an established chef at a top end restaurant who can earn up to R1 million and more per year.

However, many restaurants pay their chefs bonuses based on the restaurants sales, which can drive their salary into a higher bracket. It’s important to note that salary paid depends largely on the restaurant’s location and status.

•    General Manager

General managers are responsible for every facet of the hospitality team's success, including:

  • General Management
  • Development and Staff Management
  • Communication and Systems
  • Human Resource and Community
  • Financial Systems and Compliance

In addition to tertiary qualifications in Management, Finance and Tourism, a successful general manager would have a proven track record and experience gained over years.

•    International Sales Managers

A successful Sales Manager requires a detailed understanding and full utilization of the travel sales network in International markets, also at multiple levels in line with a multi-channel business.

Travel and Tour Operators depend on their Internation Sales Managers more than ever to engage their overseas markets successfully.
